There are numerous methods of rubbish removal in Killara, including local government / council–run waste removal services and private contractor companies such as AA Adonis Rubbish Removals that come to your door and sort, load, and remove waste of various kinds on your behalf.

There is much to be done by householders on a personal level as well in order to reduce the amount of waste that is not only deposited into landfill, but that is generated in the first place. Here are some simple tips for reducing the amount of household waste you create:

  • Buy fresh fruit and vegetables loose and only in quantities you are sure to use
  • Take your own bags grocery shopping
  • Reuse plastic grocery bags as bin liners
  • Avoid disposable products such as cutlery, crockery, and cups – wash and reuse the real thing
  • Purchase items that are reusable, recyclable, and rechargeable
  • Borrow or rent equipment you rarely use, or buy them second hand
  • Buy non-perishable items in bulk
  • Donate good quality, unwanted goods to charitable organisations – books, clothing, toys, furniture, etc
  • Look at ways to revamp clothing you already have that is in good condition rather than always buying new: raise hemlines, have clothing tailored, convert dresses to skirts, etc.
  • Buy products packaged in recycled packaging or packaging that can itself be recycled
  • Buy detergents etc as concentrates and use less
  • Compost food scraps or blend them and use as fertiliser
  • Pack sandwiches and other lunch items in lunchboxes instead of using plastic bags or wrap.
  • Plant natives in the garden – these require less raking and pruning
  • Freeze leftovers where safe to do so rather than throwing food out.
  • Rehydrate wilted vegetables by trimming stalks and standing them in fresh water
  • Reuse jars and containers as much as possible
  • Avoid use of chemicals wherever possible
      – Coffee grounds and chilli powder are ant deterrents
      – Ensure fly screens are in place and in good condition
      – Buy unbleached tissue, towel and toilet paper made from recycled materials
  • Recycle as much as possible
  • Repair broken items wherever possible rather than buying new
  • Invest in a worm farm
  • Buy pet food and litter in bulk
  • Reuse egg cartons for seedling growth
  • Rethink – before buying, ask yourself, do you really need it? Is there an alternative that is better?
  • Purchase non-material gifts – gift cards, dinner vouchers, experience vouchers.
  • Say no to junk mail in your physical letterbox
  • Invest in an e-reader and buy future books electronically
  • Shop second hand where suitable
  • Buy quality that is made to last
