Disposal of Oil: Rubbish Removal Oyster Bay

Rubbish removal Oyster Bay services in Sydney’s south by the local council are composed of general waste collection, recycling and green waste. But some things are unsuitable for disposal in any of these kerbside bins. For example, how should oil be disposed of?

Oil may include motor oil, cooking oil, and other oil products. Each must be disposed of correctly to protect the natural environment and so as to not compromise our plumbing and sewage systems.

Motor Oil

Lubricating or motor oil is used in trucks, boats, lawn mowers, cars, motorcycles, and farm machinery, and half a billion litres of motor oil are sold in Australia each year. Most of the oil used by these vehicles and other items is not burnt away completely. The leftover oil product is called sump oil.

Sump oil should never be discarded – it can be reclaimed and reused.  If sump oil is disposed of improperly, it can pollute land, waterways, and even infrastructure.  In fact, it’s important to understand that one litre of sump oil can contaminate one million litres of water, causing catastrophic harm to the environment as well as animal, bird, aquatic, and human life. Alternatively, used or sump oil can be recycled, cleaned, and used as industrial burner fuel or hydraulic oil. It can also be refined into new lubricating oil product.

If small amounts of used motor oil require recycling, simply take it to a local used oil facility which will also accept oil filters, plastic oil containers, and even oily rags. Larger amounts can be disposed of by calling oil collection agencies.

Cooking Oil

Cooking oil is very damaging to plumbing, sewerage systems, and the environment when it is disposed of in drains and down sinks. Dispose of small amounts of cooled cooking oil in garden compost, or alternatively, store cooled household cooking oil in a sealable jar and place it in your general waste bin. If properly recycled, cooking oils can be filtered and repurposed into biofuel, stockfeed, and even cosmetics.

Go to the Planet Ark website for a list of local collection agencies that will collect used cooking oil.
